Hydroxycitric acid (HCA)

Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) belongs to a group of naturally occurring compounds called purines. They are derived from various foods or they are the results of incomplete digestion of amino acid foods such as yeast, sprouts and mushrooms. They may be produced in the liver by means of incomplete digestion processes and there are many types of HCA. The most common type is known as citriodilatum which belongs to the family of alpha-amylase and is formed by hydroxycitric acid when there is an increase in the concentration of ammonia.

 

Hydroxycitric acids are known to help in the digestion of fats. This may be why you feel that after a meal you have a burst of energy and feel that your stomach is full. However, you may find that your stomach feels empty even before lunchtime. The main ingredient found in hydroxycitric acid was penicillin, which is still being produced by the pharmaceutical companies. Penicillin is used to treat many types of infections. One of its many uses is in the treatment of stomach ulcers.

 

Some research has shown that hydroxycitric acid may be useful in the treatment of stomach ulcers, particularly ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. These conditions affect approximately one in fifty adults in America. The hydroxycitric acid may reduce ulceration or damage the intestinal lining.

 

Recent clinical studies with hydroxycitric acid have shown promising results in the treatment of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is caused when the immune system starts to attack the intestines. Hydroxycitric acids have been shown to reduce the intensity of the immune attack which helps to reduce pain and inflammation caused by this disease. However, further clinical studies are needed to determine whether this type of hydroxycitric acid will prove successful in the treatment of Crohn’s disease. For now, this is only a useful aid for those who have a severe form of this disease.
